Introduction
Mid-February—still technically winter, yet somehow 18°C and raining.
Wrapped in soft, humid air, we set out on a quiet journey toward Amakusa.
After landing at Kumamoto Airport, we picked up a rental car, stopped for lunch in the city, and began our drive toward the sea. The scenery shifted gradually—ocean stretching to the right, and on the left, clusters of aging houses that felt slightly eerie.
Still, through the rain, everything softened. It felt like a quiet prelude to the stay ahead.
This time, we checked into a hot spring retreat in Amakusa—
TAYUTA, staying in the guest room “hiiro.”
🧭 Who This Stay Is For|A Place for Those Who Value Quiet, Depth & Sensory Refinement
Because of its atmosphere—deeply quiet, refined, and gently rooted in local character—
TAYUTA is best suited for a very specific kind of traveler.
Those who are drawn not to flashy luxury, but to subtle design, stillness, and emotional richness.
If you find comfort in silence,
if you appreciate spaces that allow your senses to slow down and sharpen,
and if you value a stay that feels more like a private seaside villa than a resort—
this place will resonate with you.
It’s especially ideal for those who seek
a more mature, introspective kind of travel experience,
where less stimulation leads to a deeper, more personal sense of fulfillment.
🚗 Modern Entrance & Welcome Drink with an Ocean View

The moment our car arrived, the staff greeted us immediately—even in the rain, which I truly appreciated.
The building itself is beautifully minimal. Clean lines, restrained decoration, and a modern aesthetic that lets the materials speak for themselves.
Beyond the full glass windows, the sea stretches out.
Though the rain blurred the view slightly, it only added a soft, atmospheric charm.
For the welcome drink, we could choose between:
- Non-alcoholic option
- Champagne (Dom Pérignon)
I chose the non-alcoholic one—gentle and calming, like easing into the rhythm of travel.
Check-in felt… slightly slow? Maybe it’s just me. When I arrive somewhere, I tend to want to get into the room as quickly as possible. Still, it’s a matter of personal preference.

🛺 Transfer to the Room by Tuk-Tuk

Instead of the usual golf cart, we were taken to our room by a tuk-tuk—which was honestly adorable.
It added a playful, non-everyday feeling right from the start.
🛏️ Guest Room “hiiro”|Spacious, Chic, and Modern

We stayed in the “hiiro” room, selected mainly because my companion wanted a private sauna.
To be honest, I initially thought:
“If there’s a natural hot spring, do we really need a sauna?” (laughs)
But stepping inside, I was immediately impressed by the sheer space.
It felt almost too large for just two people.
The interior design is a refined blend of greige tones and natural wood textures—very contemporary and calming. Minimal color palette, minimal visual noise.
🏗️ Interior Concept

What stood out most was the concept:
a space to quietly reconnect with nature.
- Low-profile furniture
- Large open windows
- Natural materials
- Thoughtful use of negative space
It’s not flashy—but deeply calming. A place where your breathing naturally slows.
🌿 Private Garden & Detached Sauna

The room includes a private garden—and within it, a small standalone sauna building.
I didn’t personally use the sauna, but my companion fully enjoyed it.
It can be adjusted up to 95°C, and even supports löyly (steam infusion).
Next to it is a cold plunge bath, completing the perfect flow:
Sauna → Cold bath → Outdoor relaxation → Terrace
Having all of this within your private space is undeniably luxurious.
♨️ Natural Hot Spring “Kinsen” Experience

The bath features free-flowing natural hot spring water (gensen kakenagashi).
Interestingly, the color appeared slightly pinkish-gold to me—not the deep, rich gold typically associated with places like Arima Onsen.
Compared to Arima’s “Kinsen,” the effect felt gentler and lighter.
But that’s not a negative—the water was incredibly comfortable.
The temperature was slightly on the lukewarm side, perfect for long, relaxing soaks.
And after bathing?
My skin felt smooth enough that I didn’t even need body lotion.
A well-balanced, soothing hot spring.
🚽 Honest Thoughts on Layout

While the room was beautiful, there were a couple of small inconveniences.
The restroom is located at the far end of the living area, quite far from the bedroom. Combined with slight floor level differences, navigating at night required a bit of caution.
Also, turning on lights fully wakes you up—and makes it harder to fall back asleep.
Since I tend to wake up more often after hot spring baths… this became a bit of a challenge.
A more bedroom-adjacent restroom would have made things even more comfortable.
🧖♀️ Towels & Small Wishes

A small but notable point:
A towel warmer would have made a big difference.
Towels were plentiful and could be replenished upon request, but:
- You have to call
- Wait
- Be mindful of usage
In winter, towels don’t dry easily either.
Also, while the towels were 100% cotton, their absorbency felt slightly lacking. Instead of soaking up water, they seemed to spread it around a bit—which was a bit disappointing.
🥂 Complimentary Drinks & House-Made Ice Cream

The minibar is fully complimentary—and quite impressive.
It even included champagne, along with house-made ice cream.
We had already eaten well in Kumamoto City, so we only sampled a bit—but everything we tried was delicious.
👚 Pajamas & Amenities

- Double gauze pajamas (soft and comfortable—I usually bring my own, but these were lovely)
- Humidifier in the bedroom
- Two types of pillows (including a pipe-style one, which worked well for me)
There was also a vintage-style Bluetooth speaker in the living room—though finding the pairing button took a bit of effort (laughs).
These little moments become part of the travel memory too.
✍️ Final Thoughts|A Room Designed for Quiet Reset

The “hiiro” room at TAYUTA offers:
✔ Spacious modern design
✔ Private garden + sauna (95°C, löyly available)
✔ Cold plunge bath
✔ Natural hot spring
✔ Fully stocked complimentary minibar
And also reveals small details only noticed after staying:
✔ Restroom layout
✔ No towel warmer
Overall, my impression was:
“A space with enough margin to quietly reset yourself.”
It’s not about flashy luxury—but about calm, texture, and thoughtful design.
Next time, I’d definitely stay for multiple nights.
One night simply isn’t enough to fully enjoy everything without feeling rushed.
In my next post, I’ll cover the dining and overall service—which, by the way, was also excellent.
